Is Super 8 and 8mm the same? Technically, no.
So what's the difference? The only exception is that they are both 8mm wide but once you have a closer look, the differences are quite apparent.
You may have standard 8 film reels, or super 8...or both! How can you tell them apart? Here are a few quick and easy tips to see the difference:
Basically, Super 8 has a larger frame size, but only slightly. This also makes the sprocket holes smaller than that of standard 8mm. You'll also notice that the sprocket holes on Super 8 film are perfectly centered with the image, while standard 8mm sprocket holes are perfectly in line with the space between the images. If there's a yellow stripe on the film strip, congratulations, you have a sound track as well! This feature is more likely to be on Super 8.
